On Saturday December 7 at 2 pm, hear Tiffany Liu’s trio performing at the Lunenburg School of the Arts for our Cookie Concerts! Originally from China, Tiffany Liu is an accomplished Pipa player with over two decades of dedicated practice and performance experience. The Pipa is a traditional Chinese musical instrument, which has been played for almost two thousand years in China and is one of China’s most popular instruments. Sometimes called the “Chinese lute”, it has a pear-shaped wooden body with a varying number of frets.
Based in PEI, Tiffany was nominated this year for “Global Recording” at the ECMA’s, and has performed at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, Stan Rogers Folk Festival, and Under The Spire in PEI. With an open heart and an unwavering spirit of exploration, she aims to share the beauty of the Pipa and Asian music culture with a global audience. Tiffany is joined on stage by buitarist Ivan Garnica and percussionist Mark Carr-Rollitt. All ages are welcome at this hourlong performance, followed by a sweet treat!
About Tiffany Liu
Originally from China, Tiffany Liu is an accomplished Pipa player with over two decades of dedicated practice and performance experience. She specializes in the Pipa, a traditional Chinese musical instrument. In 2010, Tiffany was admitted to Shenyang Normal University’s Ethnic Instrument Performance program with the highest score in Hebei Province, marking the start of her impressive musical journey.
In 2024, Tiffany was invited to perform at one of Canada’s largest music festivals, the Winnipeg Folk Festival, where she successfully held a solo concert. She also took the stage at the main stage of the Stan Rogers Folk Festival. During the workshops at both festivals, Tiffany connected with many musicians from around the world and engaged in exciting improvisations with them. Additionally, she was selected for MusicPEI’s Diverse Voices Program to produce a new single.
On October 25, 2024, Tiffany joined the “Songwriters & Strings” concert, organized by Natalie Williams Calhoun, who crafted all the orchestral arrangements for the event. Tiffany was featured alongside fellow songwriters Alicia Toner and Emilea May. They were accompanied by a talented ensemble including Kinley Dowling, Kev Chan, Sam Murphy, Matthieu Hughes, Adam Hill, Madeline Kapp MacDonald, Jeffrey Bazett-Jones, Karen Graves, and Olasunkanmi Omotosho, creating a beautiful night of music that left audiences captivated.
Tiffany has earned notable achievements, including winning first place in the professional category at the Northeast Three Provinces Traditional Instrument Invitational Competition in 2013. In 2014, she hosted her debut solo concert, captivating audiences with her virtuosity. Additionally, that same year, Tiffany served as the sole Pipa accompanist for the large-scale mythical Peking Opera Chang’e Flies to the Moon at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in China, showcasing her exceptional talent in the traditional Chinese music sphere.
Her passion for the Pipa led her to Canada in 2016, where she introduced this ancient instrument to diverse audiences on Prince Edward Island. She has graced prestigious events such as the Illumination Festival of Canada Games 2023, the Island Drive-In Festival, PEI’s official Canada Day 2020 video, and the 4th annual fundraiser for Celebration for Island Women. Recognized for her musical contributions, Tiffany received the PEI Provincial Arts Grant in 2022, enabling her to create her debut album, Riding the Waves.
In November 2023, Tiffany received a nomination for the “Achievement of World Music” at the MusicPEI Awards, highlighting her significant contributions to the global music scene. In the same year, she expanded her repertoire to include Celtic and Irish music, receiving acclaim and further connecting with the local Canadian community.
In January 2024, Tiffany received a nomination for the East Coast Music Award (ECMA) in the category of “Global Recording of the Year,” further solidifying her status as a respected musician with international recognition.
