Featuring works by Bach, Calace, Brahms, and a few delightful surprises, the concert reveals the mandolin’s extraordinary range of colour, intimacy, and virtuosity.
A graduate of the Toulouse Conservatory, Burou has performed with leading orchestras across Europe and beyond. Her international career has included collaborations with celebrated Japanese composer Joe Hisaishi, performing alongside the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in Paris and at Tokyo’s iconic Tokyo Dome. Her debut solo album, New Line (2024), has received international acclaim for its imaginative exploration of the mandolin.
From the elegance of the Baroque to the lyricism of the Romantic era, we look forward to hearing Marie showcase this enchanting instrument in all its brilliance. Cookie concerts are approximately an hour long at the Lunenburg School of the Arts, open to all ages and following the concert, cookies are served.
About Marie Burou
A leading figure in the revival of the mandolin on the classical scene, Marie Burou has forged a career that bridges various repertoires, from Baroque music to contemporary compositions, with a clear openness to film music and contemporary aesthetics. Her artistic work is driven by a strong desire to broaden the horizons of her instrument and to assert its place in the international music scene.
A graduate of the Toulouse Conservatory, where she studied under Julien Martineau, she completed her education with a master’s degree in Art History and Heritage, earning a “Très Bien” (Highest Honors) at the University of Toulouse Jean-Jaurès. This dual background fosters a sensitive yet structured approach to works of art, with a keen eye for their historical and aesthetic context.
A guest soloist on major international stages, she has performed on the composer’s tours Joe Hisaishi, performing with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at Paris La Défense Arena and the Tokyo Dome (Japan) in 2025 in front of more than 130,000 spectators, as well as in Germany with the Münchner Symphoniker.
She also collaborates with the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, the Montpellier Occitanie National Orchestra, the Lyon Opera, the Pays de la Loire National Orchestra, and the Dijon Bourgogne Orchestra under the baton of conductors such as Tugan Sokhiev, Daniele Rustioni, Yvan Cassar, Sascha Goetzel, Benjamin Bayl, and Joseph Swensen. She notably appears in Don Giovanni under the artistic direction of Agnès Jaoui, broadcast on Radio Classique, as well as in Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde (Mezzo.tv).
A frequent guest at numerous festivals in France and abroad (Passe ton Bach, Taormina in Sicily, Musiques et Vins in Madiran…), she creates original programs : “New Line,” dedicated to contemporary composition; “Shifted, Music in Motion”; “Cancion,” a duo with guitarist Julien Legrand; “Dolce Italia” with pianist Avnjel Laska; and “Dansons sous les voûtes” with organist Aurélie Samani.
Her New Line album (2024), available on digital platforms, has been enthusiastically received in France and the United States (Mandolin Society of America), Japan, and Australia, and was featured on France Musique by Sébastien Linares. She has also composed arrangements for solo mandolin and for mandolin and organ, published by Éditions du Loriot, and has received commissions from contemporary composers such as Takashi Ogawa and Vincent-Alexandre Jockin.
Tenured Professor of Art Education at the Toulouse Regional Conservatory and at the Tarbes Departmental Conservatory, she is constantly engaged in sharing her knowledge through master classes and cultural outreach initiatives.
