About
Join us for this very special collaboration between two pianists, Clement Fulton and Philip Chiu, at the intimate listening setting of Cecilia’s Retreat. Clement will be performing works by Bach (Italian Concerto), Beethoven’s Pathetique Sonata, Chopin and Schumann. We will hear some four hands, and other musical surprises!
About The Artists
Clement Fulton
Twelve year old Clement Fulton’s affinity with the piano started as soon as he was tall enough to touch the keys, taking time to slowly discover music on an upright at home. Following early lessons at the Suzuki School, he met Barbara Butler, who nurtured his love of harmony, improvisation and singing. Since the autumn of 2025 Clement has been a student of Philip Chiu.
“Since meeting Barbara we have spent many hundreds of hours seated at the piano together. Barbara taught me to read music and also how to feel music. She showed me that the piano can be my future and inspired my love of Bach. Studying with Philip has taught me the importance of empathy, resilience and patience, in my music practice and in life. It has been beautiful to sink into these compositions during the winter months.”
Philip Chiu
Winner of the 2023 JUNO Award for Solo Classical Album of the Year, Canadian pianist Philip Chiu values colour, curiosity, and communication as much as virtuosity. Described by La Presse as “a pianist-painter who transforms each musical idea into a beautiful array of colours,” he makes music vivid, immediate, and inviting, drawing listeners in.
Philip has performed across North America, Europe, and Asia as both a soloist and chamber musician, collaborating with artists such as James Ehnes, Emmanuel Pahud, Bomsori Kim, Johannes Moser, and Jonathan Crow. As a concerto soloist, he has appeared with ensembles including the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, Symphony Nova Scotia, and the Orchestre symphonique de Québec. A veteran Canadian touring artist, he has toured the country more than fifteen times with the support of Prairie Debut, Debut Atlantic, and Jeunesses Musicales Canada.
Equally active offstage, Philip is deeply engaged in musical life as a mentor, juror, educator, and arts ambassador. He has coached extensively at McGill University and the Université de Montréal, served on the faculty of the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal and Dalhousie University, and collaborated with institutions including the Honens International Piano Competition, CBC/Radio-Canada, the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, the Montreal International Music Competition, Jeunesses Musicales Canada, and CBC Music. Philip is represented by Andrew Kwan Artists Management.
